The Perfection Trap
The phrase “Go big or go home” is meant to inspire and empower, but it puts us in an all-or-nothing mindset: massive success, or total failure.
This the “perfection trap.” It tells us that if we can’t give maximum effort, it’s not worth trying at all. And when life is already difficult, that pressure shuts us down.
In the real world, work is a grind, kids scream, sleep is imperfect, and coffee is room temperature. For those of us not pretending to be perfect, even planning big changes makes us feel like we’re already behind. So, we check out. We scroll. We binge. We avoid.
In the real world, growth isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being reliable.
Small Actions for the Win!
Small actions are the minimum effort used to keep yourself moving forward.
At work: Update at least one slide instead of avoiding the whole presentation.
In relationships: Send a quick text instead of waiting for the right time.
“I was thinking about you. How are you feeling today?”
As a Parent: Share an apology instead of a long talk.
“I raised my voice earlier today. That wasn’t okay.”
For Yourself: Do anything small that helps.
Walk around the block. Go to bed early. Drink a glass of water. Get five minutes of sunlight. Touch Grass. Literally. 😊
Let’s say your goal is to be more present with your family. A small action is putting your phone in a different room for a bit. It won’t make you present 100% of the time, but you showed up and kept the streak alive.
If you grew up without a roadmap for these things, you’re not alone. Just remember that small actions can change everything.
Enjoy the Small Win
Your brain isn’t waiting for a championship moment or a huge success. It’s wired for progress.
Small actions tell your brain that you moved forward, and your brain releases dopamine. This little hit of “I did it” improves your mood and makes the next step feel possible. Even if you only did one small thing today, you’re still moving forward.
Why This Matters
Any chance to make an impact should be a positive one—but that impact doesn’t have to be big.
We’re not here to be heroes. We’re here to be present. To be available. To show up even when we want to quit. That’s how we influence others, and that’s how we raise better men.
Learning to recognize when you need a boost, then taking a small action instead of stopping completely is a cheat code for progress. It’s strategic. It’s honest. And it’s the difference between growth and stagnation.

What’s your 5‑minute win today?
Drop it in the comments. Drinking water counts. Sending the text counts.
